INTERNATIONAL IDEAS COMPETITION

learning from nature we designed the cultural centre by overlapping an honeycomb structure on the site. in ancient times mud hives were used in egypt and in the middle east. the honeycomb concept states that a regular hexagonal grid or honeycomb is the best way to divide a surface into regions of equal area with the least total perimeter. sharing walls means saving materials, work costs, time and soil. so we can use the territory sparingly and we have the possibility to reach the programme building requirements. the honeycomb exagonal grid also contains an idea of community and sharing space, because the obtuse angles allow to facing in more directions towards the landscape that surrounds the cultural centre and in the same time to focus on the inner and central part of the space.

the open air spaces, walking areas, meadows and water pools with border bench are created through the honeycomb envelope and try to transform the designated green zone in an ecological system of Bamiyan cultural and natural heritage.

the project supposes the possibility to conduct river water to the cultural centre so to transform completely the place and configure a new environment, defined by the local trees species, located into a large water pools, that mitigate in the summer the hot dry local climate as evaporation pans. the cultural centre would like to become the bamiyan home, able to render the identity of the place and landscape

the plan of the new cultural centre alessandrina city configures itself in continuity with the existing urban texture intended as morphological matrix of the project and it conforms to the oragraphy of the territory as a chassis, moving towards the building of a new urban connecting plate that expands the territory shared of the neighborhood as horizontal surface of generation of the cultural centre.

such new territory, conceives as an horizontal crossing slab, discloses an underground level (compared to the alessandrino neighborhood), but homogeneous at the priority level of the vallum, holding all the technical element of service for the cultural centre (stairs, services, installations, warehouses) in addition to the public parkings and some open spaces (garden-square for the open air concerts) and to the spaces for the swimming centre made of a covered and open air swimming pool for the neighbourhood and reachable from the different levels of the cultural centre and of the alessandrino park.

the same plate transforms the walking level of the neighbourhood ground level of the cultural centre intended as network of public open and transparent spaces on the ground floor and placed 3 meters over the level of the vallum.

the tower shaped media library (vertical blade), that becomes urban architectural event at the walking level, places itself in continuity with the foyer of the cultural and educational centre on the double and triple height spaces that cross the plate in vertical, true gravitational pole of the public spaces. the crossing of vertical and horizontal blades  creates a urban layer that adheres to the orography of the territory.

COUNCIL ENGAGEMENT
PSC Urban Masterplan

the high speed train station defines a new infrastructure of the territory, intended as a fast transport system, but introduces a new pole of excellence within the territory of reggio emilia and creates the possibility to give a new set of meanings to the whole urban system.
the interpolation and connection between the historical centre and the high speed train station allows to define a new urban “texture” conceived as a “sport and free time city” northbound and southbound, but also a new artificial landscape, that goes from the santa croce neighborhood to san prospero strinati eastbound and westbound.

the public spaces intended for leisure and free time, already existing in the area named giglio acquatico create the possibility to conceive the public and meeting outdoor and indoor spaces as a continuum of areas linked by a complex system of multiple transport means (train, car, bicycle, bike, walk) able to create an architectural urban event.

the punctual elements of the system (from north to south: tav station, sport area, education centre, football stadium, shopping mall, cinemas, aquatic park, open air swimming pool) are linked and structured by a urban park made of a comb of continuous tree lines that, by recalling the local placement of the existing poplar tree forests,  shape the parking lots, some green park areas and the whole system of the sport city, thus guaranteeing a connection between the railway line and its trespassing. the interchange between different transport means happens inside a cusp designed on the presence of the existing parkings that define a wedge of circulation and stop by plaing themselves between the Reggio –Mantova railway line and via Romano, wedge that becomes the backbone if the system (green wedge).

INTERNATIONAL 2 STAGE IDEAS COMPETITION

innovation and science centre is a new iconic building landscape, a sustainable architecture, that is more than a landmark. It is a place which invites the visitors and the community to meet and join in science and nature

the design of the innovation and science centre and its woven landscape (nemunas island) are based upon a sensitive and osmotic approach to the context and nature of kaunas. the design encourages people to flow from the natural island landscape and its paths inside a new cultural core and “landscape” that, in the same time, defines and becomes the end of cardo urban axis that comes from “museums quartier” (north) to nemunas island (south); it is the “cultural and leisure time” axis. that axis is intertwined with decumano urban axis that comes from saint gertrude church (west) to saint michael archangel church (east), that we define the “devotion and care time” axis. innovation and science centre completes and enhances this urban structure.

the bridge promenade that comes from the northwards museum quartier is the linking system with the modern city centre but all the building extension encourages enjoyment of the park and welcomes not only the visitors but all the citizens that want to experience a new piece of the city. the generous passage in between celebrates indoor and outdoor spaces and builds interior courtyards and exterior facades overlooking the landscape.

the proposal outlines an archeological public park, that overlays to the neighborhood existing marginality, the magnificence of the surrounding open and historical spaces: monte testaccio, englishmen’ cemetery, cestia pyramid, aurelian ancient walls and resistance park with adalberto libera post office building.

the masterplan configures a green slope as an edge to protect the neighbourhood's core, which will be the place of playing, meeting, education, culture, memory, exhibitions, performances, urban events, sports, and leisure.

the grassy slope turns around the plot, containing inside sport facilities, artists’ labs and new urban venues, by creating new perspectives and visual connections with context’s archeological and historical places.

the project intertwines the concept of open space as a new strategy that connects spaces and time of the city, creating a new level of perception and giving the opportunity to assemble, open and accomplish new public spaces, constituting a well interconnected and greatly extensive education and sport campus.

INTERNATIONAL 2 STAGE DESIGN COMPETITION

bioclimatic study of sunlight allowed us to build the architecture as a shadow, able to "reveal the presence", not only of the new project but also of the city and of its existing spaces, appreciated in their historical characters and in their environmental aesthetics qualities. the plan regards south harbor as an outdoor foyer of the helsinki city centre: everything is public (also the buildings’ roofs) and experienced inside a continuous spatial and perceptive variation; the master plan becomes a mean to stage the helsinki historical city.

architecture is intended as a set of minimal elements that may have a great significance, to assure the use of space like a living principle. the masterplan identifies two floors/levels of the harbour: one, already present, of the shores and another one new, which lies as an urban modification of the landscape of the city port (the fly over) disclosing new insights and visuals on the sea and from the sea (karjava satama), on the park and from the park (tahtitornin vuori) on the market place and from the market place (pohjoisesplanadi).

the shore determines in the masterplan the public infrastructure system of the port functioning and therefore doesn’t produce spatial variations but only flexibility. the fly over builds a new layer, a urban landscape and seascape gives new life to the skyline of helsinki south harbour and is instead a continuous variation of natural and artificial public spaces, open and closed, covered and uncovered, connected in a meaningful route network: the network of paths for pedestrians and bikers (suspended, inclined, on the ground and on the roof) is intertwined with the one of a new green railway for public transportation, able to engage in the park and to permeate throughout the masterplan from Kaivopuisto to Katajanokka.

the project tries to arrange and simplify the existing urban elements to build in spinea historical center a new urban system of "outdoor rooms" able to connect and extend around the city’s effect, intended as the possibility for citizens and visitors to identify with a place and live there. spinea is built on line blocks endorsed on its main street (via roma), which represents an element of movement and identification for every citizen. to the present day the huge vehicular traffic riases the problem of modifying the via roma essence, transforming it into a place of walking and waiting, so to return all the central areas included the city hall and the church of san vito and modesto to citizens, creating a new interfaced continuous urban system, composed of buildings and open spaces that interchange to create a dynamic urban landscape.

the project therefore studied a system of facings, views, perspectives and distances that enhance villa del maino, the barchessa, the church and the nursery parish school in part constrained by the superintendency. to build the urban system, the masterplan works on the categories and interpretations of the concept of edge / fringe / diaphragm, as an element of design that guarantees different views of the city and give way to a hierarchy and sense to existent inconsistency open spaces. the idea, therefore, involves the construction of a new urban port system (underground car parking) that is capable of constituting a terminal for vehicular traffic at Piazza Marconi.

INTERNATIONAL 2 STAGE DESIGN COMPETITION

we consider pedrignano campus at the same time, as a factory masterplan facing the highway  and a way of measuring the territory, strictly connected to the agricultural plots. the parallel elements to the highway constitue a unique longitudinal great extended wall that represents barilla on the territory: we may think of it as the system of the infrastructure (decumanus: via emilia and highway). the perpendicular alignments of the buildings to the highway define a rhythmic and modular comb, conceived in continuity/juxtaposition to the territory roads, canal and agricultural plots: we may consider them as the system of the natural and human made environment (cardus).

campus grid reflects and structures an idea of linear extension and continuity towards the highway and of deep barns/warehouses towards the country.

so we try to define the pavilion as an “horizontal” courtyard, dedicated to events area, public spaces, laboratories, stores and sport facilities and a leaning tower as a “vertical” courtyard dedicated to research and study, public spaces, laboratories, library, start up and panoramic terraces towards the landscape. it seems like a reproduction of the ground floor building’s footprint. so pavilion and tower define a new landmark, composed by the existent great wall, parallel to the highway like a decumanus and by the tower, perpendicular to the highway like a cardus.

the gabicce mare waterfront valorization interprets the relation between the town skyline and the coastal landscape through a green diaphgram, a new linear urban park, made of folds, placed between the beach and the urban texture, between sea and hills, identifying and defining a new punctual reconfiguration and connection system between nature and architecture through variable elements for position, orientation, dimension and volume.

in this configuration the new urban promenade on the beach defines itself with allignments that become from the urban texture and from the natural park that, linking each other, sketch green areas with different features, creating a connection and interchange system with the seaside buildings, and becoming a new sun-shaded green park near the sunny beach.

the park is permeable from a series of paths that comes from the shore towards the inner part of the promeade, up to the city center streets, connecting for real the town and the seaside. this natural/artificial system that identifies the dimensions of the baths on the beach and their configuration with removable and modular structures, innervate also the city wharf through a new promenade with trees that runs out in the sea pavilion, a new space for exhibition and panoramic view, that embraces the entire gabicce waterfront.

the masterplan for the new municipal centre is based on the three dimensions of depth quote (underground / overground), of the layer height (skyline/landscape) and of the surface extension (foreground/background) and cross them with the infrastructural theme (road system), structural theme (bridge), urban theme (place), architectonic theme (space) and physic – perceptive theme (route).

the physical-perceptive connections transform the architectonic project in a new urban landscape characterized by a multiplicity of variable diaphragms.

the typological concept translates the blocks “a baglio” located at borgo ulivia considering them as contemporary court blocks on a bridge structure that connect the two sides, the neighbourhoods and the system of the potential ecological ways through the idea of route.

the project traces back to the altimetry quotes of neighbourhoods and changes them into urban - architectonic connections that are representative of the morphological and typological features of the area: a series of horizontal blades as bridges turn the vertical blades of the bonagia - falsomiele neighbourhood into horizontal, building themselves up as crossing suspended blocks (borgo ulivia) facing each other and the green ring road.

the city is declined as natural paradigm of the spontaneous architecture in its ability to let each building have a free access and view to the seaside and to link and connect among themselves the houses on the hills, the empty spaces, the city and the main port.

the project develops this trace with a minimal approach mode able to improve the environment of the public spaces, the perception and use of the connecting spaces of the hills and in between through the use of curtains or fishing nets that, hanged to the electric line cables, constitute a set of stripes (far away segments) and reconfigure the perception of the center by highlighting some streets and creating a physic-perceptive strip, maybe liable, between the natural architecture of the cerros, the level of the city and the sea.

the sails, horizontally or obliquely fixed between the houses, create, by night and with the lights hanged to them, a set of lines that complete the sightseeing of the see from Valparaiso, underlining the originality and value of this natural urban network. the sails stop at the sightseeing points, road crossings and squares to allow the view of the sea and correspond to the pauses in the sensorial experience of the places.

at the same time, the material and tectonic modification of the routes configures itself and relates to the shape of the geological site using the very same rule used in the building of the houses.

they unify the landscape, constituting themselves as boundary stones of roman centuriatio or as disseminated fragments of the chinese wall, sequence of unique photograms of extremely differentiated landscapes, containing univocal contemporary signs.

it generates therefore a punctual knots’ spreading, that might be crossed and guessed by those who follow the silk road. they also might be seen on google maps as the little stones (red) of “pollicino” fairy tale.

the aosta’s roman walls renewal and renovation is thought as a new urban layer, which identifies a new real archaeological park. a system made up of many elements that can be repeated, as simple and light as possible, both from a static and aesthetic point of view. the project aims to create a frame, a new traveling path in relation to the roman ruins, within which bring out new minimal architectural links able to enhance a dialogue with the history.

the new volume of the staircase looks at the ruins from above, inserting them, more easily, in the urban structure of aosta and at the same time, identifies a dual perceptive experience between new and old, interior and exterior, empty and full, open and closed. the sloping ramps connect the level of the external city with the level of the ruins on the ground urban level and configure a cantilevered balcony, facing  the ruins from above.

the roman theatre is imagined as a background and scene of the new space for events, as a stratification of the city, in which the historical memory becomes present through a contemporary reading of the potentiality of the place. leaning against the wall, a new mobile and retractable staircase for public sessions can open at the time of the events and close during the visiting time of the archaeological park, to constitute a sequence of cultural and exhibition panels on the history of the roman walls.
